R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. One of the first popular alternative rock bands, R.E.M. gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe

Given Big Star's acknowledged influence on REM, I'm pretty sure that this song is more likely inspired by Big Star's own cover of the song on their 1974 album Third/Sister Lovers. So it probably makes more sense to compare this cover to the Big Star version rather than the Nico/Velvet Underground version. If that makes sense.

I enjoy your comments, people. I don't prefer one version over the other, I, like some of you, embrace them both (VU&Nico and this one). Given the difference in Nico's and Stipe's voices, the two version feel like two different songs almost.
You should also check Alejandro Escovedo's version. I find it real nice, too. Not so sure off the top of my head, but the main diff. his version features is the lovely harmony between his voice and the back vocals in the chorus.

it all depends on whether you can stick Nicos voice or not, cos everything else is identical. For me, its gotta be this version, Stipes voice is perfect. I discovered this before I'd heard the original so maybe I'm biased but i was very disappointed when Nico started singing. Horrible!

Respectful cover. But Nico owns this song the way REM owns Man on the Moon or Losing My Religion.
Imagine Nico covering those!

Better than the Nico/Warhol version.

The REM treatment, sparse and fragile, fits well into their repertoire - but I can't retune my ears away from Nico's wasted, industrial, sub-mezzo tone and awkward delivery.  I *will* try.....
